SIECUS announces major rebrand, changing conversations around sex ed after 55 years

(Washington, DC) – Today, SIECUS: Sex Ed for Social Change, formerly known as the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, launched an rebrand to highlight the group’s new and evolving direction. The effort follows a multitude of organizational initiatives that highlight sex education as a vehicle for social change.

“At SIECUS, we believe that sex ed can spark the social change we need in response to a variety of pressing issues–from sexual violence and reproductive injustice to LGBTQ discrimination, and more. That’s why we’re now SIECUS: Sex Ed for Social Change,” said Christine Soyong Harley, SIECUS President & CEO.

“We will continue to be a leader in advancing shame-free, science-based, and inclusive sex education as SIECUS has done for the past 55 years. But, today, we are pushing the sex education conversation beyond the benefits it can have on an individual’s sexual health,” Harley added. “We are encouraging our field, our supporters, and ourselves to continue to explore the large-scale culture shift that sex education has the power to create in this country.”

As part of the rebrand, SIECUS has cemented “Sex Ed for Social Change” as their official tagline. First announced at the inagural Sex Ed Champions and Trailblazers celebration in Washington, DC, SIECUS looks forward to sharing more about its rebrand throughout the coming year.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this rebrand not only for SIECUS as an organization, but for the sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice space overall,” said Kristine A. Kippins, SIECUS Board Chair. “So many of the battles we are fighting–whether it is protecting access to reproductive health care, including abortion, or working to adequately address the pervasiveness of sexual violence and harassment–our efforts to positively impact lives could be a lot less strenuous if more people received a quality sex education. When we provide young people with comprehensive sex education, they learn the facts. More importantly, they have a chance to unlearn stigma, misinformation, and baseless opinions–things that so often serve as the basis of our most challenging social issues today.”

SIECUS’ rebrand reflects the internal changes that SIECUS has been making over the past year. In creating new partnerships, resources, and programs–including launching the Sex Education Policy Action Council (SEPAC) earlier this year–SIECUS is proud to announce this rebrand as an opportunity to make these advancements public.

“From now on, you will rarely see our name without our tagline, because it is more than a phrase. It is a promise,” Harley said. “We are working toward a world where all people can experience and enjoy sexual and reproductive freedom as they define it for themselves. By advancing sex ed for social change, we know that we can make that world a reality.”
